Terry Gilliam is just so good at giving informative commentary. I've listened to many, and have collected laserdiscs just to hear some, and I think he's pretty much it, in terms of who gives the best. I mean, he's like Michael Jordan, effortlessly laying perfect back-story, or why his instincts took the film here and not there, interesting casting anecdotes, and more. If there was ever a reason to invest in a laserdisc player, it's for goldmines like this. Rated awesome.

"Only we know that," Gilliam says at one point when he divulges some offscreen trivia, "We and the owners of the Criterion collection". Which is a damn shame, because presently (and for years) this informative and enjoyable commentary has been available only on now-obsolete laserdisc, despite the petitioning of film fans to get it ported over to DVD. Gilliam demonstrates an amazing capacity to talk about the film from beginning to end without pause, seemingly on the fly. He finds something to say about every scene and covers every base imaginable. It's a treat to hear him openly enjoying the film's performances and odd inspired and unscripted moments. He's also very canny/mindful about how to structure films that will 'play' for an audience.

I finally get the laserdisc (not easy when you are 20+ years late to laserdisc, in the UK and working on a budget!) and Criterion release a Blu Ray version!
Yet another superbly enthusiastic Gilliam commentary. Packed with information and anecdotes. Gilliam also explains his motivations and working process. It's the kind of commentary that you would want to return to again and again.
