Commentaries by writers/biographers, where they are basically reciting a pre-prepared essay, tend to make for pretty dry readings at the best of times but this one from John Ellis (writer and maker of the 1991 documentary ‘Distilling Whisky Galore' about the making of the film) takes it to a whole new level as he bases it not on his own writings but on the written works of others about the film, its director and Ealing Studios, along with the original novel!
It's not without interest, such as when he reads a passage that makes a good case for viewing THE WICKER MAN as being inspired by and even a partial remake of WHISKY GALORE, but it only really comes to life when he, all too briefly, departs from these texts to add an interesting coda to one of the events in his documentary, and you wish there had been a lot more of this.
So enjoy the film (and Ellis's documentary which is on Disc 2 of this set), but you'd be just as well to skip the commentary and seek out the books yourself if you're really interested.
