This commentary almost put me to sleep. The only thing preventing me from dozing off was the chipmunk voices of Shankman and Blonsky chatting endlessly about trivial matters.
Yes, the one thing I can't complain about is silent pauses, the pair is constantly talking, unfortunately not much of importance is said. They do stumble upon a few subjects that start
to peek my interest, like Blonsky talking about being bullied in school and how Michelle Pfeiffer influenced the creation of a new musical number. The few tidbits provided here, however, is
not enough to recommend a listen. For those craving a worthwhile commentary about the film I instead point you to the second one with the producers, which was surprisingly good.
Commentary 2:
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron

This is a first one for me, a producers commentary that is better than the director's one! Admittedly, that has a lot to do with the banality of Shankman's effort, but what we get here is still quite a treat. Everything that is lacking from the first commentary we get in spades here!
They talk us through the inception of the film, from them trying to figure out a project to follow up Chicago with to them managing to sell themselves as producers on the film. They also talk at length about John Travoltas hesitations about taking the role as Edna, not thinking he was right for the part, and of course there is some discussions about the differences between this version of Hairspray and the previous ones.
The biggest drawback to this commentary is the duos monotonous voices, their phlegmatic droning is a bit testing at times, but they provide enough tasty Hairspray-morsels to make up for it.
