Exactly what I expected. Very informative, relaxed commentary. The only thing that kinda bugged me is the fact that aside from Kenan, none of the other participants in the commentary were introduced. We know they’re some of the producers, but we can’t tell who’s who (though I think I recognized Steve Starkey). Aside from that, the “Monster House” commentary will absolutely please fans of the movie.
Kenan talks about it all – from the early concept to the finished product. We get to learn that the voice cast of the movie was exactly what Kenan wanted (pretty cool for a first-time director) and since this is a Robert Zemeckis-produced movie there’s a lot of motion-capture talk. Kenan is by himself, actually watching the movie, while the other participants on the commentary seem to be “stiched” together (I think it’s just interviews). The producers comments are mainly about the cast, the technology behind the project and how Kenan worked with the actors on the motion capture stage. As for Kenan himself, he is chock-full of information that will really make the listener appreciate everything that went into the making of this film.
So, if you can get past the slight annoyance of not knowing who’s who, this is a pretty fun and informative commentary. You certainly will learn stuff that are not included on the making-of documentary or the IMDb trivia section.
