Superb track from this trio. Much is probably already known about the making of "The Little Mermaid." But, even if you have seen "Waking Sleeping Beauty," or investigated the history of Alan Menken & Howard Ashman, there's even more trivia to be gleaned from this commentary. The late '80s were a crucial "turning point" for Disney feature Animation. Listening to the co-creators (with Alan Menken in tow) you get the sense that the animation team had a lot to prove to Disney execs, and the public at large. While not feeling the pressure of surpassing their previous work (as would be the norm the following decade), many sequences and songs were nearly abandoned due to a poor "test-screening" or the suggestions of Jeff Katzenberg. The "Ursula" as homage to "Divine" anecdote is well-worn, but many additional bits about the animation process are peppered throughout. Alan also introduces archival audio with Howard Ashman as the departed songwriter deconstructs his musical offerings. A nice, if solemn, addition to the commentary. 9/10
