Rule of thumb, with exceptions: the only people who should do scene-by-scene commentaries - which are a dodgy proposition to begin with - are the directors of those films. But for someone who had nothing to do with the original product to take this approach on an animated film about 60 years after the fact? You could just as easily record your own commentary while watching this and get about the same results. "Historian" Sibley is enthusiastic about the film but provides only a few minutes of useful background information, instead settling for a Commentary Of The Bleedin' Obvious with the usual "look at the shadows here...and here's a change of angle...this music is like a march...note the facial expressions...the mood here is humorous...". There is so much that could have been said about this groundbreaking film - if you're going to produce a special edition DVD wouldn't you at least make sure there was an intensively researched, informative commentary track on it?? I would have loved to have listened to an hour-long essay of production history, Orwell's views about potential film adaptions, the reaction in the UK and US, critical reviews of the time, etc. This classic deserved better.
